Curl-Flat Attacks Cover 3
The Curl-Flat passing concept is one of the oldest and most popular passing concepts in football. It is a traditional Cover 3 beater that goes all the way back to the passing concepts of Sid Gillman and Don Coryell and into the West Coast offense. We’ll be talking about all of those beginnings in this episode.
Curl-Flat is a horizontal stretch that is effective against Cover 3 because you put three receivers to one side of the field against a defense with only two underneath defenders to each side. You should always find an open receiver in Curl Flat against Cover 3.
9-Step Curl and a Shoot
During this deep dive of the Curl Flat concept, we are going to deep dive on how we use it in the Pistol Power Offense System. We use a 9-step curl with seven big steps and two little steps for the outside receiver and a shoot route to get with fast to stretch the defense.
The 3rd man on the call side is a check release by the running back to get into the hook zone. The 3 receivers to a side, along with the trigger read system, makes it almost unstoppable against Cover 3.
I’ll also share the All Curl variation of the Curl Flat concept that you can use out of 3×1 formations. This variation is more similar to the West Coast Offense’s “Hank” concept. There’s a few more variations included to attack other coverages.
Adjustments for the Curl-Flat Passing Concept
As always in our deep dive, we will breakdown how to attack Curl-Flat and shut it down with your pass coverage.
Cover 3 teams are vulnerable to curl-flat. Get tips on strengthening your coverage to stop this concept.
You can also make coverage adjustments. Man coverages, Cover 2 and quarters provide can give the curl-flat attack a difficult time.
Take advantage of teams that strength of the curl-flat against Cover 3 by giving different looks pre-snap, too. Disguising the coverage makes this a more difficult concept for teams to run.
